Baekhyun, the acclaimed soloist and EXO member, is set to release his fifth extended play, Essence of Reverie, on May 19.

Announced on April 25, the EP marks a significant moment in Baekhyun’s solo career as he continues to refine and expand his creative identity. The project will explore “the boundary between reality and ideals through its dual concepts.”

The promotional rollout began on April 28 with the unveiling of a detailed schedule, followed by a steady stream of teasers that have captured fans’ attention worldwide. These include a series of concept photos presented in two visual styles—Essence and Reverie Version—each embodying the dual nature of the EP’s theme.

Exploring Duality: Essence and Reverie

Baekhyun has also released two concept films. The first is the Essence Version, which debuted on May 1, filmed entirely in black and white and filled with dramatic, introspective visuals. It ends with two contrasting versions of Baekhyun sitting face-to-face, hinting at a dual perspective.

The Reverie Version, released on May 7, picks up where the first film left off. It shifts focus to the more dreamlike version of the singer, immersing viewers in vivid, kaleidoscope imagery that includes fireworks, balloons, and clouds. Each element evokes a surreal, almost childlike world of imagination.

Inside the Soundscape

On May 13, Baekhyun released the highlight medley for Essence of Reverie, previewing seven emotionally rich tracks:

  • “Chocolate”
  • “Elevator”
  • “Lemonade”
  • “Love Comes Back”
  • “No Problem”
  • “Black Dreams”
  • “Late Night Calls”

A common thread of vulnerability binds these songs, as the musician candidly explores the complexities of love—its excitement, uncertainty, yearning, and lingering emotional imprint. The sound is rooted in the R&B genre, with smooth, emotive vocals and introspective lyrics that have become his signature in recent years.

Baekhyun’s Global Reach

Further amplifying anticipation, Baekhyun announced the “Reverie World Tour” on April 29, beginning June 7 and running through October 26. The tour spans 18 countries, including the U.S., Australia, China, Japan, and more. This global itinerary not only reinforces the K-pop star’s international popularity but also underscores the broad appeal of his solo artistry.

What Comes Next

With Essence of Reverie, EXO’s main vocalist seems poised to embrace a dual concept that blends introspection with imagination, inviting listeners to experience a more nuanced and layered version of his artistic self. This EP signals a bold evolution in Baekhyun’s solo discography and is rich in sonic texture and emotional storytelling.

Pre-save and listen to Baekhyun’s fifth EP, Essence of Reverie, on May 19.
