Laufey Officially Announces New Album A Matter of Time

Laufey finally announced her third album, A Matter of Time, and released the lead track “Tough Luck” at midnight on Thursday.

After much teasing about Laufey 3, the Jazz-Pop musician finally revealed the cover art and name of the upcoming album.

“I’ve taken my diary and turned it into an album of songs, delving into the whole range of emotions—from the beautiful to the ugly—that one experiences as life and love unfold in time,” Laufey wrote on Instagram.

She’s slated to release the new album on August 22, featuring 14 tracks, including “Silver Lining” and “Tough Luck.” The vinyl records will also be available for pre-order on Thursday morning.

This album comes after her 2023 Grammy Award-winning album, Bewitched. The singer has consistently charmed listeners with her unique musical style and smooth voice, bringing Jazz into the 2020s.

At midnight after the official album announcement, the “Valentine” singer released her latest song “Tough Luck,” the second after “Silver Lining” of her new A Matter of Time era. “Tough Luck” takes fans through the emotions of the end of a relationship with someone who tried to devalue the singer’s self-worth.

Laufey sings, “Tough luck / My boy, your time is up / I’ll break it first, I’ve had enough / Of waiting ’til you lie and cheat.”

She joked on TikTok that the single is her “[crashing] out through song for once,” but the lead-up to the new album unveiling this more vulnerable side of herself through music.

“People expect a pretty façade of girly clothes, fantastical stories, and romantic music. This time, I was interested in seeing how I could draw out the most flawed parts of myself and look at them directly in the mirror,” she stated of the new album.

The Grammy Award-winning singer refuses to allow herself to be degraded, singing in indignation, “I should congratulate thee for / So nearly convincing me / I’m not quite as smart as I seem / That I’m a loudmouthed nobody / My accent and music are dumb / Your tattoos are no better, hun / The proof says you’re tragic as f**k / The truth is that’s just tough, tough luck.”
