The Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning actor appeared during the Cannes Film Festival in France on May 14 to share information on the upcoming film’s craziest stunts before its world premiere. However, the 62-year-old seemed uninterested in letting fans know if this will be his final portrayal of Ethan Hunt.

“Just let us show the {film} tonight. This is like the 30-year culmination of this, and I’d rather have people see it and enjoy,” Cruise told the crowd after being asked about the franchise’s future. “We’ve had an amazing time doing it, and it’s been a lot of fun, and I just want you all to enjoy it and know everything. The culmination has come to this moment, and it’s been a lot of fun.”

Cruise has been the face of the beloved action film series since the 1996 original version, directed by Brian De Palma. The franchise went through four directors before Christopher McQuarrie took over directing and screenwriting duties in 2015.

The upcoming eighth installment is a sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023), while adding small nods to some of the franchise’s past entries, and is rumored to serve as the final film. “It is that journey and our lives are the sum of our choices and these are things that we talk about and I think that {McQuarrie} got a perspective on the franchise that was unique in the story that he wanted to tell,” the actor stated when asked about the film series’ impact.

“I was like, this is unique. His ability to pull those moments out and create this kind of emotional story,” he added.

The Top Gun actor’s appearance at Cannes comes two days after he received the British Film Institute’s highest honor, the BFI Fellowship, at the annual BFI Chair’s dinner in London. McQuarrie presented the award to his star, which is awarded to those that support the United Kingdom’s film industry.
