SNL Addresses Harvey Weinstein After Initial Silence
This past Saturday, Saturday Night Live in New York made sure to include their voice on the Harvey Weinstein narrative; the first time they’ve addressed the situation since allegations broke.
After people were quick to criticize the comedy show on social media for omitting and failing to mention the bombshell that had dropped earlier in the month, Saturday Night Live finally included the news of Weinstein into their sketches. Fans suggested that, much like the treatment of the Bill Cosby scandal, Saturday Night Live would gloss over and ignore the issue at hand.
SNL was quick to mention that they attempted to write Weinstein jokes into their sketches, but they were seen as tasteless and did not play well in dress rehearsals.
This past weekend, however, SNL made sure to include as many jabs at Weinstein, while still staying respectful of sexual assault victims. At one point, they even called him a “well dressed skin tag”, spending the first few minutes of the Weekend Update dragging Weinstein to hell and back.
Even more commendable, there was an all-female roundtable sketch was written to address rape culture and how Hollywood and the world enables it. The women portrayed Marion Cotillard and Viola Davis, and Kate McKinnon even ended the sketch on a serious note, reminding everyone that violence against women doesn’t just happen to famous women and it needs to be taken seriously. In the words of McKinnon, “Pandora’s Box is open now, and Pandora is pissed.”
