McKayla Maroney’s #MeToo

McKayla Maroney releases a powerful statement adding to the #MeToo movement.

The #MeToo movement serves to aide abuse victims in sharing their stories. It helps to show other victims that they are not alone and there are many people out there who this has happened to.

Two-time Olympic gymnastics medalist (and part of the famous 2012 Fierce Five team) shared her #MeToo story.

Her story started when she was 13 years old. Former Michigan State and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, is already facing 22 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Many other women have already spoken out against this man. McKayla said that her abuse began while she was in Texas at the Karolyi Ranch training for gymnastics. It continued for the remainder of her gymnastics career. He found any excuse to “treat her” and the abuse only ended when she retired from gymnastics.

USA Gymnastics released a statement saying that they are “outraged and disgusted” that this happened and they are so proud of McKayla for speaking up.

Like McKayla said, it’s never too late to speak up.
