Famke Janssen on X-Men Departure

Whether you recognize the Dutch actress from the Taken franchise, or Annalise’s reoccurring love interest on ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder, one fact remains: she is always stunning.

In one of her more iconic roles, Famke Janssen also starred in the X-Men franchise as Jean Grey, or simply Phoenix. Her co-stars include Halle Berry, Sir Isaac McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and Hugh Jackman. Janssen played her character in five of the movies, her character becoming very integral in the third X-Men film, before appearing in short cameos in both Wolverine movies and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

It has come as a surprise to many fans, however, when the actress wasn’t approached to reprise her role as Jean Grey in the next X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix. Of course, the movie is to be set in the 80s time period, thus encouraging Sophie Turner to reprise her from X-Men: Apocalypse, to take on the titular role of Dark Phoenix.

Janssen has spoken out on her disappointment with the franchises decision, claiming that this isn’t the first time that they have participated in such ageist and sexist acts, trading in younger women to take over the role of another, while continuing to play the men in junction with their younger counterparts. She had assumed, much like many of her fans, that the studio would make the decision to cast both women, acting alongside the other.

That being said, Janssen says that she is “really excited” to see Turner take on the role, telling the younger actress that she is perfect and that she can’t wait to see what she’s done with it.
