Disney Channel Features First Gay Storyline
Disney Channel is growing substantially with this new story plot.
The popular series “Andi Mack” tells the story of the main character Andi who is a thirteen-year-old girl trying to fit in before her sister returns home and changes her entire plan. Andi finds out that Beck (her sister coming home) is actually her mother and Andi’s “mother” is actually her grandmother.
This isn’t the only twist in the series as Disney makes history with the addition of its first gay storyline with a tween. The episode will appear in season two of the show and will feature an entire episode dealing with a tween character’s struggle of being gay and coming out to both his friends and family.
Episodes like this take us back to the days of “Boy Meets World” and original Disney Movies like “The Color of Friendship” where issues of family troubles and racism flood the impressionable minds of children as they learn to adapt and fight them. Adding a storyline that will reflect on so many children who are confused about their orientation will be a lifesaver for so many.
My name is Kelsey Comeaux, I’m currently a Senior at McNeese State University, majoring in Mass Communications with a concentration in New Media. I’ve always had an interest in creative media arts as well as music (four years private piano lessons) and slightly self taught acoustic guitarist ;) I remember making movies on my dad’s “Windows Movie Maker” growing up and showing them to my friends and family. Building on emotion and presenting an important message through my projects was such a fulfilling experience. I hope to do that on a wider base one day.
Other than that, I love sports and am naturally a competitive spirit. I love to go running for fun, as weird as that sounds; it’s such a great release for me during stressful times. I also enjoy writing, short fiction is my expertise, as well as reading various novels mostly consisting of Science Fiction and Romance. Anything dealing with an adrenaline rush involving the outdoors I’m game for. I’m here to explore, love wildly, feel passionately, and have diligence deriving from the soul.
