Miss South Africa Is Crowned Miss Universe

Congrats to 2017 Miss Universe winner Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters who was representing South Africa.

The 2017 Miss Universe competition was held on Sunday night at The AXIS theater at Planet Hollywood casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip. Steve Harvey returned to the stage as a host for the third time. Performances included Fergie and Rachel Platten.

Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, was crowned Miss Universe after impressing the judges throughout the competition.Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is 22 and just recently earned her degree in business management from North-West University. She won over first runner-up Miss Colombia, Laura González, and second runner-up, Miss Jamaica, Davina Bennett.

During the question and answer portion of the competition, the newly crowned Miss Universe talked about how she believes that women getting paid only 75% of what men get paid for the same number of hours is unfair. She also discussed in an interview how she is inspired to teach women self-defense after being held at gunpoint herself.

The competition’s top 13  finalists were Thailand, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Spain, Ireland, Croatia, Great Britain, USA, Brazil, Canada, Philippines, Venezuela, and China.
