Black Mirror’s ‘Hang the DJ’ Takes Online Dating Up A Notch

Netflix

Black Mirror is back and it’s tackling the wonderfully awkward stages of online dating but with a twist. You should definitely tune in to the series in general but this episode hits hard for millennials dabbling with online dating. In typical Black Mirror fashion, the episode explores the depths in which technology can take over our lives and become too much.

In this case, we meet the lovable Amy and Frank who have a small device telling them where to meet their potential perfect matches. You can think of it as Siri or Alexa except for the device literally tells you what to do (most of the time) and for some unknown reason, the two utilizing the device have to obey.  The device tells them that the relationship will only last twelve hours. Things were going so well for them for a whole five minutes and as a viewer,  you’re definitely rooting for them to be a perfect match.

But unfortunately once a couple mutually checks their expiration date the countdown starts right then and there. This feature would inevitably save many of us from investing too much time on Mr. Wrong to get to our own perfect matches. Although the device eliminates guessing how long you’ll be with someone, it can become hopeless when you’ve been in a bunch of shallow temporary relationships with no perfect match in sight. But something about these two just seemed so right and it begs the question: is the device really helping? Watch the episode and we promise you won’t regret it.
