The Grey’s Anatomy star that plays the character of Dr. Meredith Grey recognizes her evolution as a young actress to now. Pompeo remembers auditioning for Grey’s and not wanting to be “stuck on a medical show for five years.”

Now, at 48, she realizes that being able to be good at your characters 14 years down the line is quite the skill. It’s also allowed her to get to the place to ask “for what [she] deserves.”

Pompeo recalls advice given to her by Shonda Rhimes telling her to “Decide what you think you’re worth and then ask for what you think you’re worth. Nobody’s just going to give it to you.” It was this advice that led to her earning more than $20 million a year.

Shonda Rhimes is the creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. Pompeo considers that Rhimes comfort ability with sharing the power has led to their special relationship and loyalty.

The Grey’s Anatomy star has also signed a two-year extension of her contract, paving the way for Seasons 15 and 16 of the medical drama.

Here’s to more of that strong female leadership.

Grey’s Anatomy returns Thursday, January 18 on ABC.
