Frances McDormand Invites Female Oscar Nominees to Stand During Ceremony

(ABC/Craig Sjodin)

While giving her acceptance speech for Best Actress for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, McDormand used her time to call out the gender disparities among nominees.

Once the actress finished laughing at the obvious dearth of female nominees, she told members of the audience to “invite us into your office in a couple days, or you can come to ours, whichever suits you best. And we’ll tell you all about them, ” in reference to the stories and projects that she says women have and need to be financed. She finished her speech by saying, “I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider.”

Some categories had either only one female nominee or no female nominees this year. However, Rachel Morrison made history by becoming the first woman to earn a nomination for Best Cinematography.
