Sabrina Carpenter On her EP, Can’t Blame A Girl For Trying
Sabrina Carpenter is best known for playing Maya on the hit Disney Channel series, Girl Meets World, a spin-off of the successful 1990s series, Boy Meets World. But Sabrina also has an amazing voice. Sabrina recently sat down with Glitter to talk about her role as Maya on Girl Meets World, her debut EP, Can’t Blame A Girl For Trying, her charity work and her favorite thing to do during the winter season.
GLITTER: You recently released your debut EP, Can’t Blame A Girl For Trying. What kind of music can fans expect to hear?
SABRINA: They can expect for me to evolve, right now it’s a sort of organic pop, it’s young and fresh like myself (I’m going to say that while I can) and as I keep writing I’ll try new things. I’m super into alternative music as well as R&B so I’ll keep writing and see where the wind blows me.
GLITTER: Do you have a favorite song from the EP?
SABRINA: I’ve always loved white flag. The message pulls me in and I love performing it live.
GLITTER: Tell us about the music video for your recent release, “The Middle of Starting Over,” how did you come up with the concept?
SABRINA: The concept was simply to have fun. It’s a fun song; it’s about accepting new things in life and making the best of if, so there were a lot of things we just added sporadically while filming that added some magic. 🙂
GLITTER: Besides singing, you’ve also played a few different roles. What’s your favorite part about acting?
SABRINA: Favorite part about acting is being able to make people believe you’re somebody else. I think it’s such an incredible thing and a hard thing to do, which makes it a bit addicting. I also love the whole experience, everyone working together in front of and behind the camera to make a story come alive!
GLITTER: Tell us about your new role on the new series, Girl Meets World. What is it like playing Maya?
SABRINA: Maya is a role I’m so lucky to play because she’s so diverse. She keeps her walls up by being tough, sarcastic, confident and funny. She’s got a harder life behind her walls though which gives me two totally different sides to explore.
GLITTER: Did you ever watch the original Boy Meets World? If so, who was your favorite character?
SABRINA: I’ve seen every episode of Boy Meets World; I always loved Topanga. But who didn’t?
GLITTER: What was it like to have Rider Strong direct the most recent episode of Girl Meets World?
SABRINA: It was just inspiring to see Rider behind the camera, controlling it all. You can tell he’s passionate about it. It’s also great because he did BMW, so he gets how the actors are feeling. He’s a great director.
GLITTER: Who is your spirit animal?
SABRINA: Alice in Wonderland.
GLITTER: What was it like to perform at Slimefest in Australia?
SABRINA: Slimefest was my first time in Australia and possibly my favorite trip I’ve ever been on. To see people in other countries singing the words to my songs is something that took me by surprise, in an extraordinary way!
GLITTER: Who are some of your favorite artists?
SABRINA: I love Adele, Hozier, Lorde, Christina Aguilera and many more.
GLITTER: What do you love to do in your spare time?
SABRINA: I never like down time, always like to be working on something and having fun. So in spare time, I’ll try to do covers, or spend time with friends.
GLITTER: Do you have any favorite hobbies?
SABRINA: I love to draw and dance. Those have always been hobbies of mine.
GLITTER: What is something fans may not know about you?
SABRINA: I never cried at movies until I saw Toy Story 3. Then it all went downhill from then on.
GLITTER: How do you balance school and acting?
SABRINA: Balancing the two is easy and difficult at different times of the year. We have a specific amount of hours of school that we have to get done on set; we have two incredible teachers and we all have our own desks in the school room!
GLITTER: Do you have any new projects coming up that you can tell us about?
SABRINA: My full album is coming out soon and I’m very excited for people to hear it. I also have a movie called Horns that’s comes out on Halloween with Daniel Radcliffe and Juno Temple.
GLITTER: Do you have a hidden talent or hobby that no one knows about?
SABRINA: Does eating too much Panera Bread count as a hobby?
GLITTER: What is your ideal first date?
SABRINA: Somewhere you can talk and do something fun at the same time. Mini golf or bowling?? And we would have to get frozen yogurt after because why not?
GLITTER: What do you enjoy doing on your free time?
SABRINA: I enjoy being with fun people. Going out to dinners, grilling out at home, and campfires with friends.
GLITTER: Are you involved in any charity work? If so, which charities and how can others get involved?
SABRINA: Children’s autism hope project has always been a charity close to my heart, my mom is a chiropractor and helps many children with autism, they are so sweet and it always makes my day to meet them. (http://www.projecthopesc.org/project-hope-foundation)
GLITTER: Do you have a secret crush on anyone?
SABRINA: I think Zac Efron, Chris Pine, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ansel Elgort are all beautiful.
