Mexican Journalist Hector Gonzalez Antonio Has Been Murdered
Mexico is not safe for journalist.
The late Hector Gonzalez Antonio was found beaten to death in the northeast border state of Tamaulipas. Tragically, there have been six reported deaths of journalist in 2018.
Journalists in Mexico live in fear that if they report balanced and fair stories they will be killed. Recently Mexican newspaper, El Norte, just shut down. The papers editor says it had become too dangerous.
Mexico is one of the worst places to be a reporter, ranking 149 out of 180 for the Reporters Without Boarders Freedom Index. When journalist are not allowed to do their jobs out of fear of persecution their fundamental human rights are being violated. Often times reporters write about drug cartels or the corrupt Mexican government, although the motivation is unclear, this puts a large target on the backs of Mexican journalists. Unfortunately, leaders lack the political will to investigate these killings and put a stop to them.
