June is LGBT Pride Month
LGBT Pride Month is celebrated every year in June, in remembrance of the Stonewall Riots of June 1969.
The Stonewall Riots were a huge turning point for the Gay Liberation Movement that occurred in the United States and propelled further legislation for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer plus community.
While the initial celebration took place on the last Sunday of June, the events were organized over the years to become celebrated and spread out throughout the entire month.
Celebrations include pride parades, parties, workshops, talks, concerts, and more, all of which encompass social aspects of unity and community. Memorials are also held for those who have been lost to HIV/AIDS and hate crimes.
There is also LGBT History Month which is every October, in which education-based organizations commemorate and educate the history of the local, national, and global importance of visibility.
Although Pride Month has just begun, people are already spreading the love through social media. Inspiration is on every platform to encourage activism. Through both humor and solemness, this month is about celebrating the LGBTQ+ community as a whole.
