The 17-year-old singer and actress explained to her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, that she could not be in a monogamous relationship.

In a Red Table Talk discussion on Monday, June 11th, in the family’s home, which they labeled, “The Sex Episode,” Jada wanted Willow to know that she shouldn’t feel shame regarding sex and that she could talk openly with her about it. The conversation took place amongst Willow, her mother, her grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Jones, and her best friend Telana Lynum.

Jada prompted, “Let me ask you guys a question because your generation is known as the ‘hook-up generation,'” to Willow and Telana, “How do you guys feel about monogamy?” Willow then honestly responded, “That feeling of ‘you’re my one and my only, there’s no one else’… for me, that would not work.”

“It’s a tricky one, and I tell you I think about it a lot with married women who are in this sexual monotony of feeling this obligation toward having to have sex because they’re in a monogamous relationship,” Jada replied, her mother chiming in, “Sometimes you just don’t feel like it! But you feel obligated because you know they do.”

Jada continued, “Never feel obligated,” then added, “It’s because women fear losing their men if sex isn’t good or you’re not having enough sex.” Ultimately, they all agreed that these are pointless and unrealistic expectations and that every woman and person should simply do what works best for them.
