Catch Timothée Chalamet in ‘Hot Summer Nights’ Out Now
Obviously, we’re thrilled to see him on-screen again, but why does he look even younger than he did in Call Me By Your Name?
It’s because first-timer Elijah Bynum’s new film was actually shot in 2015–before Timmy had become an overnight sensation via the Best Writing Adapted Screenplay Oscar-winner, or his other hit role of 2017 in Lady Bird.
Hot Summer Nights is the story of a grief-stricken 18-year-old boy who is sent away to spend the summer of ’91 with his aunt in Cape Cod following his father’s death. It would be Chalamet’s big break, or so he and Bynum both thought, as he was just a 19-year-old Columbia student who had yet to land a lead role or amass any real celebrity whatsoever at the time.
“He came bounding into the meeting, and he had sweatpants on, and a backpack. His hair was all messed up, and he had this big smile on his face. We met for probably over two hours. I don’t know that I got many words out. It was just him going on and on and on about the script and how much he loved it and how badly he wanted to do it and how he was so terrified to even put himself out there because if he didn’t get the role he didn’t know how he was ever going to get over it,” the writer and director revealed to HuffPost.
Despite the long road this film took to arrive at the final cut, and Timmy’s alternative route to major cinematic success at just 22 (his performance as Elio did earn him the title of ‘youngest Best Actor nominee in 80 years’), Hot Summer Nights opened in limited release on Friday, July 27th. And, to be honest, we’ll gladly check it out to get our Timmy-fix as we await the October premiere of his next film, Beautiful Boy, if for nothing else.
