The music video for 5 Seconds of Summer’s “Youngblood” was released August 2nd and may not be what you were expecting. They are not only expanding on their music sound but their video aesthetic and meaning as well.

5 Seconds of Summer is an Australian pop punk and rock band from Sydney, New South Wales. They formed back in 2011, and consist of members Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford. Their debut single, “She Looks So Perfect” was a chart-topper and shot them towards success.

Fast forward four years later, they are still jamming out and experimenting with music styles and music video direction. “Youngblood” is their latest release. In the video, the band members are not shown at all. It was directed by Frank Borin and shot in Japan, showing the Japanese Rockabilly culture.

Member Ashton Irwin shares why they chose this unique approach: “There are many wonderful, interesting, and captivating subcultures all over the world. The Japanese Rockabilly culture is that of a renaissance and beautiful flare of passion for everything old and new and that makes this particular subculture so interesting and amazing to us. Thank you for allowing us to be explorative with the concepts we choose to visually express our songs to you.”

To say it simply “rocks” is an understatement. Check it out below.
