Julianne Moore Reveals She was Fired from the Set of “Can You Forgive Me?”
Award season may be behind us now, but actress Julianne Moore says that her cut from Can You Ever Forgive Me? has left her unable to view the film because it is “still kind of painful.”
After the directors hand shifted from scriptwriter Nicole Holofcener to Marielle Heller, Julianne Moore was fired from the set of Can You Ever Forgive Me? and replaced by Melissa McCarthy. On this past Thursday’s interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, a caller to the show asked Moore why she left the set of the Oscar-nominated film, to which Moore replied, “didn’t leave that movie; I was fired. Nicole fired me.”
We imagine this has got Melissa McCarthy feeling a little like the lead role that she commandeered in place of Moore right about now.
Moore was later asked about Holofcener’s reasons for letting her go, to which Moore replied, “I think she didn’t like what I was doing.”
“We had just been kind of rehearsing and doing pre-production and stuff, and I think that her idea of where the character was was different than my idea of where the character was,” she commented. “And so, she fired me.”
Moore told Andy Cohen that she hasn’t seen the movie yet because “it’s still kind of painful,” however she was quick to add that she has no bad blood with McCarthy.
Julianne Moore followed her statements with a heartfelt line about Melissa McCarthy, who received an Oscar nomination for her role, “I love Melissa McCarthy. I worship her. I think she’s fantastic, so I’m sure she’s great”, Moore said.
Women empowering women, that’s what we like to see.
