Now, it would take far too long to break down exactly who was nominated for what. That information is all available from Playbill, who has the official details. Today we are just going to give you some ins and outs so when your friends start speculating about the Tonys you’ll know exactly what’s up.

First of all, the Tony Awards are the Oscars when it comes to Broadway. This award show takes into account every single show that came out in the 2019 rotation and nominates five shows or individuals per category.  There is an academy in charge of choosing the winners as is the case with all academy award ceremonies we see. In that way, it’s pretty simple. There are twenty-six Tony categories overall, so there are plenty of nomination spots open.

Here are a few bits of trivia for you about the awards:

  • This year’s ceremony will be the 73rd. That means we will be celebrating 75 years of Broadway excellence in 2021.
  • “Tony Award” is actually short for “The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre
  • Hadestown received the most Tony nominations in 2019, at 14 overall.
  • The record for the highest number of Tony nominations was Hamilton with 16 nominations in 2016.
  • The Tony Award is the 4th spoke in the “EGOT” award. this is another term for someone who has won an Emmy, a Grammy, and Oscar, and a Tony.
  • There have only been 15 EGOT winners as of 2019.
  • Harold Prince holds the record for the highest number of individual Tony Award wins at 21.
  • The musical that won the most Tony Awards ever was The Producers in 2001.

These are just a few bits and pieces to get the conversation started. Hopefully, you now feel informed enough to tune in to the Tony Awards on June 9th, 2019. The Award show will be broadcast on CBS, and James Corden will be returning to host.
