Ali Stroker Made History at the 2019 Tony Awards
Ali Stoker made history as the first actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony Award.
Ali Stoker is not your typical Broadway actor. She can sing a tune, transform into a character, and do choreography all while pulling it off in a wheelchair. For Stoker, she didn’t let her disability get in her way of pursuing her dream in the theater industry. Her hard work came around full circle at the 2019 Tony Awards show.

Stoker won her Tony for her role as Ado Annie in the Broadway revival of the musical, Oklahoma!. As she accepted her statuette, she had very moving words for everyone who was watching her make history that night. She said the award was “for every kid who is watching tonight who has a disability, who has a limitation or a challenge, who has been waiting to see themselves represented in this arena — you are”. There were hardly any dry eyes in the crowd as Stoker made her heartfelt speech.
