AOC Talks About the First Night of Democratic Debates with Stephen Colbert
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert the other night and gave some of her perspectives of the first Democratic Debate for the 2020 election.
It was officially night one of the debates, so the second group of potential presidential contenders hadn’t had their time onstage yet. AOC told Colbert that, as a woman of Puerto Rican heritage and a representative of the Bronx, she thought that the candidates’ use of Spanglish was a “good gesture to the fact that we are a diverse country.” Colbert likened the large number of people on stage to “a combination of speed dating and a first date.” She mentioned a few of her favorite debaters from night one, but also really emphasized how minority groups were getting the attention they deserve, such as trans people and immigrants.
When asked if there were any subjects that she believed should have been brought up, AOC said, “I don’t think that we are discussing climate change the way we need to be discussing climate change.

“It is such a huge, broad, systemic issue, and you can’t just say, ‘is Miami going to exist in fifty years.’ We need to say, ‘what are we going to do about this.’” She also gave major recognition to all the groups of younger people who have been mobilizing to bring attention to the need to have a specific debate surrounding the issue. AOC hasn’t officially endorsed a presidential candidate yet. AOC also said that she believes that we need a historical voter turnout this year, so don’t forget to register to vote in time for the primaries.
