Rapsody: A Female Rapper to Checkout

Instagram

Rapsody delivers direct, powerful verses over melodies that accentuate and let her rhymes shine.

Rapsody or Marlanna Evans grew up in Snow Hill, North Carolina and began her music career at North Carolina University where she joined a hip hop group called H2O and its spinoff Kooley High. She caught producer 9th Wonder’s eye in 2004 when he heard one of her verses while meeting with the group. She then launched her solo career in 2008 after signing with 9th Wonder’s music group and releasing her mixtape Return of the B-Girl in December of 2010, which had features such as Mac Miller and Big Daddy Kane.

Her next mixtape, Thank H.E.R. Now, got her more acclaim and showed her storytelling abilities and had features from Estelle, Raekwon, and Big K.R.I.T. among others. Her 2011 project For Everything had her working with Kendrick Lamar and Freeway. In 2016, Rapsody signed to Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation, and her debut label album came out in 2017 called Laila’s Wisdom and she received two Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. It’s safe to say that Rapsody is an artist we should all be on the look out for.
