Queen Latifah and Will Smith Set to Produce Hip-Hop ‘Romeo & Juliet’ for Netflix
William Shakespeare’s tragic story of our favorite star crossed lovers get a new twist with hip-hop musical.
Everyone knows the unfortunate tale of Romeo & Juliet. Two people who come from rival families fall in love and simply cannot live without one another. Basically, every girl’s fantasy… besides the family rivalry… and the part when they commit suicide. But all in all, a boy who will do anything to be with one he loves. Queen Latifah and Will Smith have joined forces to put a unique spin on the lover’s story with a hip-hop musical. This contemporary musical with urban rhythms follows a young waitress from Brooklyn and an aspiring musician from a wealthy family who fall in love against the odds. This present-day affair takes place in the birthplace of Hip-Hop, New York City.
Solvan ‘Slick’ Naim wrote and directed the script with Dave Broome. Naim has directing credits on segments such as It’s Bruno, Power, The Get Down, Snowfall, and Blacklist. Latifah and Shakim Compere will produce through their company, Flavor Unit Entertainment, along with David Broome and Yong Yam for 25/7 Productions. Smith is the executive producer through his company, Overbrook Entertainment, with James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett.
An official casting and premiere date has not been mentioned just yet but we are very excited to see who will be bringing this present-day romance to life. Any guesses on who you think will be the leading lovers in this musical?
