Vijay Iyer is well known in the jazz world and he has led this trio for over 12 years. They are best known for their album, “Break Stuff,’ which Iyer describes as “stripping down the music to its bare bones,” and inspired by hip-hop specifically DJ Kool Herc, who is known as the father of the DJ breakbeat. He’s performed everything from John Coltrane to M.I.A. The trio includes Vijay Iyer on piano, Stephan Crump on double bass, and Jeremy Dutton on drums. Iyer studied physics and mathematics before becoming a professional musician in the 1990s. Not bad. The man knows his stuff with 22 albums under his belt holding an undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics including a Ph.D. in music cognition. He’s also a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, professor of music at Harvard, and received DownBeat magazine’s Artist of the Year award three times.
