Salonen Premieres Castor along with Conducting Tchaikovsky & Bartók at LA Phil Oct 18th and 19th
Salonen conducts his own latest orchestral work Castor, followed by rising star violinist Daniel Lozakovich for a program that includes Tchaikovsky and Bartók, this weekend at LA Phil.
Esa-Pekka Salonen is known as both a composer and conductor and currently the Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor for the Philharmonia Orchestra. Salonen has been the music conductor for the LA Phil for 17 years and is credited with breathing new life into the organization including helping the orchestra open Walt Disney Concert Hall. As though that wasn’t enough, his resume just keeps going with him presiding over countless premieres of contemporary work, launching the Esa-Pekka Salonen Commissions Fund, and contributing to making the orchestra one of the best-attended and funded in the USA. He is the Music Director Designate of the San Francisco Symphony. He is the Artist in Association at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. He recently joined the faculty of the Colburn School, where he leads the Negaunee Conducting Program. He is also the Conductor Laureate for the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Salonen will conduct the world premiere of Castor which came to fruition when he decided to write “two independent but genetically linked orchestral works. Pollux, slow and quite dark in expression, was the first of them. Castor, extroverted and mostly fast, has now followed.”
Salonen hand-picked Lozakovich to play Tchaikovsky, who is best known for emotional and romantic melodies that helped make masterpieces such as the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
After intermission, Salonen and the LA Phil also perform one of their signature works, Bartók’s late masterpiece, which will delight attendees with highlights from every section of the orchestra. Béla Bartók was heavily influenced by French composer Claude Debussy, but his passion was his love for the native music of his country, Hungary, which influenced his music later in life.
