‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Cancelled + New Spinoff Announced
The Game of Thrones prequel, written by Jane Goldman and starring Naomi Watts, gets canceled during post-production.
Game of Thrones released their last season this summer, finishing off its 8th season. After the series finale, HBO announced plans to develop a new prequel with Naomi Watts to keep the phenomenon going. The series was set to focus on the “Age of Heroes,” particularly highlighting the White Walkers, the House of Stark and Lannister.
However, according to reports from the Hollywood Reporter, HBO representatives pulled the plug on the show. Jane Goldman, the creator of the new series, reportedly emailed the cast to give them the devastating news.
Despite the recent cancellation, HBO announced it’s new Game of Thrones spinoff prequel House of the Dragon. The new series will adapt George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, focusing on the House of Targaryen. On Twitter, Game of Thrones said the new series is co-created with George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, with Michael Condal directing the pilot and other episodes.
