BBC

Jonah Hauer-King has been cast as the Prince Eric for the Live Action Remake of The Little Mermaid.

King’s casting was announced Tuesday evening after months of deliberation over who would portray the prince in the upcoming film. Previously, fans were under the impression that artist Harry Styles would portray the prince, but the possible plans were ultimately scrapped and King was later cast in the role after a series of readings and testings.

American audiences may recognize King from the film A Dog’s Way Home that was released earlier year. In this film, he portrays Lucas, a teenager who takes in a stray dog and becomes separated from her. King has also starred in the BBC adaptation of Little Women, the drama World on Fire, as well as a West End production of The Entertainer.

The English actor will be joining a cast that includes Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, and Halle Bailey, who will be portraying Ariel opposite of King.

Lin Manuel Miranda will also be acting as a songwriting for the movie, teaming up with the original composer, Alan Menken, to showcase all of the original film’s well known songs from the original film, as well as new songs that Miranda will be writing and Menken will be composing.
