Interview: Ava Michelle Dishes on the New Netflix Movie, Tall Girl
Some might remember actress and dancer, Ava Michelle, from Dance Moms on Lifetime, but her most memorable role yet is playing that of Jodi Kreyman in the Netflix comedy, Tall Girl. Ava has been trained in contemporary, ballet, pointe, and jazz. Ava discusses her big break, how she’s like Jodi from Tall Girl, her approach to auditioning, and her definition of self-love. We also love her celeb crush, and we 100% agree that we cannot live without coffee in the morning either.
GLITTER: How long have you been acting?
AVA: About 4 years!
GLITTER: What would you say was your big break?
AVA: TALL GIRL!!!!
GLITTER: What can you tell us about the Netflix movie, Tall Girl? Who do you play?
AVA: Tall Girl is a coming of age film, tells the story of a 16-year-old girl, who I play, named Jodi. She has been bullied for her height most of her life and believes it is a negative thing because this is what she is constantly told by others. When an exchange student enrolls in her school, she thinks she might finally have everything she’s ever wanted. Throughout her journey, Jodi discovers many things about herself that even surprise her. It is a story about finding yourself, love, friendship, and battling the normal complications of high school.
GLITTER: How are you like or unlike your character?
AVA: I think we are most alike with our emotional journey to finding self-love, and obviously, we both are very tall! One of the biggest differences that I found is that Jodi didn’t really have someone to directly relate too like I do. I have my mom who has continuously been a huge support, and she is also tall. So I was able to go to her for advice, and this is something Jodi didn’t have.
GLITTER: How do you prepare for your roles?
AVA: This is my first big role, so down the road, I will probably find out my way! But for this role, I really just studied the script and did lots of improv around Jodi and her relationships!
GLITTER: What is your approach to auditioning?
AVA: Trying not to let my nerves get the best of me, lol. I wanted this role so badly because of how much I connected with Jodi.
GLITTER: We know you are also a professionally trained dancer. What type of dance is your favorite?
AVA: Contemporary or hip hop!
GLITTER: What advice do you have for other tall girls and women?
AVA: STAND TALL always. And wear those heels. 🙂
GLITTER: What do you like to do on your free time?
AVA: Cook, hang with friends, watch movies, shop, and write music!
