This was Ricky Gervais’s fifth time hosting the Golden Globes and he did not disappoint. When announcing the presenters for best director, Gervais was quick to note that no female directors had been nominated. He even joked that to fix the problem, female directors should not be hired at all.
Kate McKinnon, the Saturday Night Live comedian, presented the Carol Burnett Award to Ellen DeGeneres. McKinnon teared up as she explained how DeGeneres becoming openly gay on TV inspired McKinnon to continue to follow her dreams of being an actress and have more LGBTQ+ representation in the entertainment industry.
When Michelle Williams was giving her speech after winning Best Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie, she expressed the importance of women’s right to choose and how women need to be selfish when voting.

Awkwafina won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. She made history as the first woman of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe for a lead role.
Tom Hanks received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. Charlize Theron gave an introduction about Hanks and thanked him for giving her a second chance at her audition that landed her a role in That Thing You Do! Hanks had a tearful acceptance speech that he blamed on his cold.
