Discover What Oprah’s New Book Club Pick Is About

John Paul Filo/CBS

The newest addition to Oprah’s Book Club is American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins and should be at the top of your reading list.

The 83rd pick for Oprah’s Book Club and the third in Oprah’s partnership with Apple is American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. The book follows a mother, Lydia, and her son, Luca, as they flee Mexico after a drug kingpin orders a hit on Lydia’s husband. Their journey involves dangerous obstacles as they make their way to the U.S. border by foot and freight train. The book is said to deepen the reader’s understanding of a migrant’s plight.

Jeanine Cummins has written three previous books. The first, A Rip in Heaven, is a memoir about struggles her family faced and the other two, The Crooked Branch and The Outside Boy, are novels.

While researching for American Dirt, Cummins interviewed migrants, border patrol, volunteers at the border, and others who are eyewitnesses to this story. She wanted to make the story feel as real as possible.

American Dirt is available in stores. It has been called one of the most anticipated books of 2020 and has sparked some lively debate. For readers interested in the debate, over the next few weeks there will be debates on Oprah’s Book Club Instagram. On March 6th, there will be an in-person interview between Oprah and Cummins exclusively on Apple TV+.
