INTERVIEW: Victoria Park from CW’s THE FLASH on her big break

Victoria Park started on the other side of the camera, but as luck would have it, Victoria ended up in an acting class and she hasn’t stopped since then. Currently, Victoria can be seen playing Kamilla Hwang on the CW hit show, The Flash, which airs on Tuesdays at 8 pm. Glitter sat down with Victoria to talk about her role on The Flash, how alike or unlike she is to her character Kamilla, her approach to auditioning, one thing she can tell us about the current season without giving anything away, what she loves to do on her free time, and how she uses her voice for positive change. Read on to find out more about this amazing actress.
GLITTER: How long have you been acting?
VICTORIA: I actually started on the other side of the camera – I originally wanted to be a director or cinematographer. But as life would have it, I ended up in an acting class and have been doing it ever since. That was about eight years ago now!
GLITTER: What would you say was your big break?
VICTORIA: Every job I’ve gotten has been meaningful and memorable in its own right, but Sweet/Vicious (MTV) was the first time I ever had a pilot picked up to series. It was right before the holiday break, and I was at Disneyland for the first time with a group of my friends. They all swept me up in this massive group hug, and we were all screaming and jumping up and down. I’ll never forget it.
GLITTER: What can you tell us about the CW show, The Flash? Who do you play?
VICTORIA: The Flash is a show based on the DC comic character, the Flash, and it’s one of several Arrowverse shows on the CW… but if you’re reading this interview, you most likely already know that. I play Kamilla Hwang, Cisco’s girlfriend and a photographer/reporter at the Central City Citizen, Iris’s newspaper.
GLITTER: What can you tell us about the current season without giving anything away?
VICTORIA: Season six has been a whirlwind! We just had our mid-season finale, and CRISIS IS COMING. After the crossover episodes and holiday break, we’ll be back with a new villain and storylines to tackle for the second half of the season… and trust me, you won’t want to miss it. I’m personally excited to see Team Citizen grow in the second half of the season, and Kamilla grows as a photographer along with it.
GLITTER: How are you like your character?
VICTORIA: I think Kamilla might be the most similar to me of any character I’ve ever played. She’s just a fairly normal gal – smart, loyal, and passionate about her people and her work. We also both have a similar dry sense of humor and know our way around a snappy comeback.
GLITTER: How do you prepare for your roles?
VICTORIA: If it’s a new character/audition, I’ll read the character description and mine it for any details and history. Then I read the full script – really taking my time to imagine every detail so the world is full and solid in my imagination. Then I’ll go back and fill in all the gaps for my character in particular – really finding the “why’s” behind everything. It’s fun work!
GLITTER: What is your approach to auditioning?
VICTORIA: It’s pretty much the same process I outlined in the last question. I’ll do as much work as possible beforehand, so I can go into the audition room and just play freely.
GLITTER: How do you use your voice for change?
VICTORIA: That’s a great question. I like to think I’m fairly open on social media about my beliefs and causes I care about – foster care, victims of sexual abuse/trafficking, sustainable/ethical fashion, and protecting the environment, to name a few. But I also believe that every individual person can make an impact, and I make sure to lend my time and money to organizations that are fighting to make a change every day.
GLITTER: What do you like to do on your free time?
VICTORIA: Spend time with my husband, family, friends, and my two cats and dog. I absolutely love food, so I’m probably trying a new restaurant or recipe. I also love being outdoors and try to hike and/or camp as much as my work schedule allows.
GLITTER: Best advice you were ever given?
VICTORIA: “Just do it.” – Nike. No, but really. I used to let the fear of the ‘what ifs’ hold me back – what if they don’t like me, what if I fail? Until one day I realized… so what? Better to have tried and failed than not tried at all. And moving forward in spite of your fear is a truer mark of courage than if you didn’t have the fear in the first place.
GLITTER: Glitter has a Celebrity #SelfLoveCampaign, and we want to know, what’s self-love mean to you?
VICTORIA: Self-love and self-respect are so important… and definitely something I don’t do perfectly. I am my harshest critic, but I’m learning how to give myself grace. I’m also learning that it’s okay to say “no” at times, and that rest is an undervalued, but vital key to health.
GLITTER: What would be a dream role for you?
VICTORIA: I would love to play Silk in the Marvel universe! She’s such a badass, and I love that she’s Korean American too. I’d also love to be in a historical drama. There are countless stories of Asian American women who have left their mark on history/society, and it would be a dream to be able to portray any one of them.
GLITTER: What’s on your playlist right now?
VICTORIA: Leon Bridges, H.E.R., and Maggie Rogers.
GLITTER: Favorite places to travel?
VICTORIA: Any national park or place with trees, mountains, and amazing views.
GLITTER: Coffee or Tea?
VICTORIA: Tea. Coffee makes me crazy.
GLITTER: Favorite fashion indulgence?
VICTORIA: Shoes. My whole family is addicted.
GLITTER: Any projects you can tell us about that you’re working on next?
VICTORIA: I’m wrapping up a short film I co-directed and DP’d called To Borrow To Keep, and I’m hoping to do some more directing in the coming year!
