Vampire Diaries star Kat Graham joined UNHCF to send a message of love and welcome to LGBTI refugees in the United States.

Every year on May 17, many countries around the world recognize an International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. Activists and political organizations honor the holiday to raise awareness of the global LGBTI community and the challenges they face each day.

The holiday is particularly well-known in Europe, Central America, and South America, as well as in the 69 countries that still prohibit same-sex relationships.

This year, actor Kat Graham recognized the important date by sharing a video from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The video focuses on LGBTI refugees and the additional social barriers they face during the COVID-19 pandemic. Check out the video below:

Gay, bisexual, and transgender refugees often encounter bias and discrimination. During an outbreak, hurtful stereotypes worsen other pandemic-related challenges. As a result, refugees who are LGBTI are more likely to experience limited access to healthcare and financial disadvantage.

Graham shared UNHCR’s video, writing that “everyone should be able to be who they are and love who they love without fear.” She invited her followers to share the same message of welcome and protection. During uncertain times, uplifting messages like these are especially important.
