Broadway Musicals Support Black Lives Matter During Shutdown

Twitter/Disney Studios

Despite the stages being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Broadway community is more alive than ever.

During the weekend, as protests occurred throughout the United States, numerous musicals showed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement. On May 30, Lin-Manuel Miranda appeared on the Hamilton Twitter page to express the show’s support for the Black community, as well as share resources for others to actively help the cause.

“I’m sorry for not pushing harder and faster for us to speak these self-evident truths under the Hamilton banner, which has come to mean so much to so many of you,” he shared. “[Hamilton] doesn’t exist without the brilliant Black and Brown artists in our cast, crew, and production team who breathe life into this story every time it’s performed.”

Hamilton wasn’t alone. Musicals like Dear Evan HansenHadestownMean Girls, Come From Away, and The Book of Mormon posted online that they stand with the movement. Even shows that won’t be returning to the stage once Broadway re-opens, like the fan-favorites Beetlejuice and Frozen, took the time to show their solidarity.

The queens of Six not only demonstrated their support and donated to multiple organizations, but they also shared ways that their fans could help. The list included signing petitions, following Black voices on Instagram, and more.

Please read and visit the link in our bio for ways you can help now. 🖤 #BlackLivesMatter SIX is a show that has been seen to champion diversity and empower Black female-identifying voices, and we are so proud to have this position in the theater community. We are also a show that is largely created and produced by white people – and like so many shows, SIX benefits from the talent and work of our Black cast members and colleagues everyday. It is therefore our duty to stand up for and support Black people always – and not just when it’s trending – as to be silent is to be complicit. To our Black colleagues and Queendom – know that we support you and we love you. Black lives matter. To our white and non-Black colleagues and Queendom – it is our time to stand up and support the Black community, and to educate ourselves on how we can help combat racism in our communities. DONATE Following the murders of countless Black people at the hands of police brutality, people are protesting for justice across America right now. Many people are being unjustly arrested and unable to pay bail – as a result they’re being taken to overcrowded facilities, many of which have confirmed COVID-19 cases. We believe it’s our responsibility to put our money where our mouth is, so we are donating to the organizations listed on slide 2. We encourage you to donate what you can, if you can, to organizations helping the protestors who are fighting for justice across the US right now. USE YOUR VOICE If money isn’t a resource that you have right now, there are 6 petitions you can sign at the link in our bio which will help make a difference to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. FOLLOW & LISTEN Slide 4 lists some people you can follow right now on Instagram who are amazing and inspiring Black voices. RESEARCH & LEARN Slide 5 has books you can order or download right now to help educate yourself on the devastating impact that white supremacy has had and continues to have on Black people.
