The Collegiate Gymnastics Community Is Speaking out on Black Lives Matter
The collegiate gymnastics community is coming together to speak out against racism.
The University of Oklahoma, University of Florida, and UCLA all posted to their athletic pages and social media in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement. Their respective communities have all been actively speaking out on behalf of young Black athletes. UCLA posted a powerful and moving tribute to all of the past Black UCLA gymnasts in a video narrated by current team member Margzetta Frazier.
Frazier openly thanked all of the past Black UCLA gymnasts who have paved the way for her, naming them off one by one. UCLA used the video to emphasize the desperate need for Black representation in not only gymnastics but the country as a whole. Frazier has been a vital advocate during this time on social media, using her platform as a gymnast to promote representation.
Frazier’s TikTok celebrates the Black gymnasts who made history in the gymnastics world since the origin of the sport. Referencing names such as Dominque Dawes, Gabby Douglas, and Betty Okino, the young UCLA gymnast takes a stand against racism by sharing the stories of other prominent Black gymnasts. The collegiate gymnastics community continues to speak out against racial inequality by using their platform to promote change.
