Marc Jacobs Shares Photo of Vandalized LA Boutique on Instagram: ‘Property Can Be Replaced, Human Lives Cannot’

Luxury fashion brand Marc Jacobs is an absolute trendsetter: The brand is paving the way for fellow brands by championing Black Lives Matter.

In a recent Instagram post, Marc Jacobs posted a picture of his Rodeo Drive boutique, which was vandalized and looted (along with fellow luxury brands Alexander McQueen and Chanel). His storefront sign was vandalized and Sandra Bland‘s and George Floyd’s names were graffitied over the store’s logo plaque. Marc Jacobs eloquently responded with “A life cannot be replaced. Black Lives Matter.”

Nationwide, luxury fashion brands have become the targets of raids. Various stores in New York such as Nike, Bloomingdale’s, and Gucci have been vandalized. In contrast to rival luxury fashion brands that have dismissed passionate protests and the unfortunate looting as “opportunistic” (such as Chief Executive of Off-White, Virgil Abloh) or remained silent about the damage done to their stores, Marc Jacobs has addressed the issue on Instagram. He is relatively unfazed by the incident; he remains focused on the larger issue at hand; racism.

In addition to highlighting the central issue of systemic racism, Marc Jacobs has been posting fruitful, informative resources, such as links to charitable Black Lives Matter organizations, and messages of solidarity on his Instagram stories.

“I am standing with the Black community and people of color along with those dedicated to the pursuit of real progress and change. I have made mistakes in the past. I will continue to listen. I will continue to learn. I am committed to taking the necessary and meaningful actions in my place of business to achieve progress toward a just future. I believe that fashion – like any artistic pursuit – plays an important and powerful role in civilization as a means of self-expression as it reflects on moments, moods, time, people, places, cultures and possibilities. My work has always been one of collaboration, both as part of a creative team and part of a business structure that affords me the opportunity to bring the work we do to life. As such, I am committed – alongside our business executives – to reviewing the organizational structures and the culture at Marc Jacobs through a racial equity lens to make progress as we pursue meaningful and lasting change.” —@TheMarcJacobs
