Netflix Documentary ‘Disclosure’ Brings Visibility to the Transgender Community
Netflix has a new original documentary which highlights how film and television have portrayed the culture of the transgender community over the years.
When Variety magazine asked the executive producer of Disclosure, Laverne Cox, what pride means to her, her response was equally progressive and inclusive. “Pride needs to be linked to Black Lives Matter,” Cox tells Variety, “They need to be deeply connected. It needs to be connected to a feminist movement as well because if we can bring all these movements together, then that is the coalition we need to really have the revolution that we need.” Disclosure delves into the underlying paradox of positive representation giving rise to vulnerability within the transgender community. Acknowledging how film, television, and the media have evolved transgender representation, Cox aims at uncovering transgender visibility.
Disclosure shows viewers how the media’s portrayal of transgender people has impacted not only their lives, but American culture as well. Director Sam Feder establishes a bona fide equal representation of the transgender community on film and behind the camera. His authentic depiction of how the media has regarded the transgender community showcases the history of the emotional, mental, and physical strife that transgender members have faced. The documentary commemorates overcoming many of these obstacles, as more and more members of the transgender community are more commonly represented in film, television, and government.
