Turns out fans didn’t have to wait for too long. On the same day, JoJo released her latest music video for the song “Small Things,” included in her latest album, good to know. Directed by Santiago Salviche, the video features JoJo singing about missing her lover and dealing with heartbreak while being surrounded by iconic choreographies and magical props.
“Here’s a piece of art that we made to express how painful it can be to hold in your feelings,” JoJo wrote in her social media. “To act like you’re okay, when- in all honesty- you’re not. I wanted this video to feel like catharsis.”
Although the video is absolutely stunning and heartfelt, JoJo revealed that she has been delaying its release to show solidarity with the on-going Black Lives Matter protests happening worldwide. People have been fighting for Black Lives Matter and for the end of racism since George Floyd was murdered by law enforcement in Minneapolis, MN in late May.
JoJo herself has actively shown her support by sharing petitions, attending protests, and demanding justice for victims of police brutality and racism, such as Breonna Taylor and Elijah McClain. She even used the music video for “Small Things” as a call to action, using the clip’s last few seconds to re-direct viewers to the ACLU’s website. ACLU is an organization that, for almost a century, has worked to defend individual liberties given to everyone by the law and the Constitution in the United States.
“I want to say it clear as day: Black people made me who I am,” JoJo shared in the video’s description. “Not only my longest standing friendships, but also the record executives, mentors, teachers, romantic partners, and loyal fans who believed in me and took a chance on me – they have all shaped me. Without their support in every way, and without the artists who inspire me to make music, I would not exist.”
