Florence Pugh Is Educating Herself as She Issues an Apology for Cultural Appropriation
Florence Pugh has issued an apology addressing her actions as she reflects on her past cultural appropriation.
The Midsommar and Little Women star took to Instagram to reflect on how she “grew up watching […] high profile pop culture icons adopting cultures in similar ways, so I didn’t think wrong of doing it too.”
“I’ve read, listened, signed, donated, read again, ssh’d my white fragility and really wanted to trace instances in my life where I have been guilty,” Pugh said. Her apology stresses why we always need to remain considerate of other cultures as she admitted to “cultural appropriation, which came to my attention when a fan last year pointed out a picture of me I had posted back when I was 17.”
She referred to when a photo where she adopted the trend of wearing cornrows but also reflected on her love of henna, saying, “I actually wasn’t being respectful in how I was using it. I wore this culture on my own terms only, to parties, at dinner. I too was disrespecting the beauty of the religion that had been taught to me those years ago.”
Florence joins a list of celebs to have who have been sharing the ways they’ve been educating themselves on the current political climate. It’s more important than ever to be aware of the racism around us and it’s never too late to start educating yourself to help dismantle systemic racism for good.
