Model Emily Sears Stayed Awake Through the Entirety of Her Brain Surgery and Here’s What She Has to Say About It
The popular model posted a detailed account of her recent surgery, and you’re going to want to hear her story.
In April of last year, Emily Sears was rushed to the hospital after having a major seizure while shopping. While she was being treated, she was diagnosed as having a cavernous malformation, otherwise known as a cavernoma, which is a cluster of abnormal blood vessels in the brain–the cause of her epileptic seizure.
“So, last Thursday, I had brain surgery!” wrote Sears in the Instagram caption of a photo of herself in a UCLA Neurosurgery hospital bed which she posted on Monday. “I’ve delayed posting this because I don’t even know where to begin. The past year of my life is so hard to put into words.”
Sears was awake for the entire procedure and recalls every moment of being awake: “There was 2 surgeons and one waved at me… it was as strange and surreal as it sounds!”
She also expressed how this experience changed her worldview and how it left her with an enormous amount of gratitude: “I have a deepened respect for the human body, the human mind and the human soul. I am humbly grateful for the ability to access healthcare, for the fact that my condition had a cure and for the support of my friends, family, industry peers and for my incredible man who has stuck by me the whole time.”
The “incredible man” Sears is referring to is her boyfriend, who was responsible for taking the candid hospital shot.
I really love this picture because it isn’t posed at all. My boyfriend took it while I was sleeping after my surgery, I’ll always have this picture to remember what I went through! pic.twitter.com/itL7U0mHjJ
