Janet Mock Appears on GMA and Continues to Be a Powerful Voice for Black and LGBTQ+ Communities
Janet Mock is an actress, activist, and author who has emerged as one of Hollywood’s leading female directors- and one breaking barriers at that.
Mock recently appeared on GMA to discuss the power of television in “building bridges” of understanding between different demographics of people. Speaking specifically of Pose as a show garnering greater representation for people of color, she expressed her humility at being able to portray authentic stories of her community.
“Being an ally is not a noun, it’s a verb. It requires action.” – thank you @janetmock for sharing your wisdom with us! #UntilWeAllBelong pic.twitter.com/26z7R4OxSO

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, the director has made sure her voice is heard both on and off-screen as a vocal supporter of transgender rights. In 2019, she made history as the first Black transgender woman to sign an overall deal for Netflix, going on to helm an episode of Pose. The deal marked an important milestone for diversification on television, with more of Mock’s work in the pipeline as a co-producer for The Politician and Hollywood.
And that’s just the start. Mock recently took to Instagram in support of Strong Black Lead, a directive spearheaded by Netflix executives that promotes Black media talent. Conversing with Broadway star Jeremy Pope, the pair spilled some behind the scenes insights into their Hollywood collaboration. They got candid about their journies to fame, with Mock highlighting her directorial efforts to center Black performers and using the show to underpin a message of unrestricted love.
