The Disney Channel Latin America star Sebastián Athie has died at age 24.

Fans and co-stars took to social media to celebrate the life of the Latin American actor and pay tribute to his admirable character. The late Sebastián Athié, known for his iconic role as Lorenzo Guevara in the popular Argentine television series Once, died prematurely at 24. His fiercely loyal family, friends, and fans continue to grieve his death and console each other during this difficult time. As People reports, Disney Channel Latin America commented on the harrowing news via Instagram: “We will always remember him for his talent, companionship, professionalism and above all enormous heart…”

The brand also posted a tribute to the actor on Twitter, “Rest in peace, Sebas. Your art and your smile stay forever. We regret the departure of Sebastián Athié and we will always remember him for his talent, companionship, professionalism, and above all, enormous heart. We accompany his family, friends, and fans in his farewell.”

In a world stained with racial intolerance and prejudice, Athié continuously championed historically underrepresented voices (voices from the Latinx community). Disney Channel is traditionally a white space where cis-hetero patriarchal norms are portrayed and promoted. Typically, minorities are subject to niche castings, they’re branded as drug dealers, dropouts, and delinquents. Therefore, Athié served as a role model for Latinx youth, his inspirational role as Lorenzo Guevara promoted diversity and inclusion.

Although Athié’s cause of death remains an enigma, his compassionate, ambitious, and go-getter spirit shines bright in the spotlight. In the aftermath of his death, the world is reminded of his kind soul and refreshingly positive persona. Friends and close influences have come forward to share complimentary personal anecdotes that attest to Athie’s admirable character. Athié’s co-star Daniel Panitio affirmed Athié’s tenacity, impressive work ethic, and charm. Panitio gushed, “Noble souls do not die and your light will be eternal,” he wrote in Spanish, elaborating that he would remember Sebas for his passion, discipline, and love. “My roommate, my friend, my brother,” he added, calling Sebas’s death “the first time I feel like I’ve lost a brother.”

We receive this tragic news with heavy hearts. We send love, warmth, and positive thoughts to Athié’s friends and family. Hopefully, Disney Channel can further celebrate Athié’s memory by continuing to favorably feature Latinx youth on their network. May you rest in peace, Sebastián Athié.
