‘The Old Guard’ Is the Female-Powered Action Film You Need to Liven up Quarantine
If your movie lineup is needing a boost, Netflix has you covered with its new female-powered release.
The Old Guard follows a covert group of Earth’s immortal crime fighters, with drama ensuing when they encounter a new immortal threatening to dismantle their team. Leading the cast is Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne, who are adding to their already versatile resumes as ruthless, 6000-year old heroes battling alongside Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli.
The film is based on the book series by Greg Rucka (also the mind behind the screenplay) and it seems the trailer promises the high octane drama we may need to liven up a homebound weekend.
The film has already drawn praise from critics for its casting and plotline. Not only is it the first comic-to-film adaptation directed by a black woman, Gina Prince-Bythewood, it also centers a gay relationship between its leading male characters. It’s a move in the right direction for representation in the film industry and if Twitter reactions are any indication, the film is sure to be a hit.

Gina’s credits include The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights, reflecting her intent for inclusive film choices. Her latest film is no exception, with Gina expressing in a Q&A with Deadline her love for the characters from “different backgrounds and cultures and sexual orientations and genders… come together to save the world.” Even better, the film reminds us, according to Gina’s Refinery29 interview: “we have a limited time here, so what are you going to do with the time that you have?”
The Old Guard is now available to watch on Netflix, so get ready for gripping action sure to have you on the edge of your seats.
