Career Counselor Latoya Pearson Shares 5 Easy Tips for a Successful Virtual Interview
Employers are pivoting to virtual interviews–no problem, we’ve got you.
First off, Congratulations 2020 college grads. We’re sure you’re excited to leave finals, early lectures and overpriced textbooks behind. But, now what? To help you prepare, we got the inside scoop from a career counselor, Latoya Pearson. She conducts interview workshops, mock interviews, and professional development workshops across several college campuses. So, let’s prepare!
To ensure that you put your best foot forward during your virtual interview, Pearson suggests that interviewees test their computer and links at least 2 days prior to the interview.
She also says dress professionally from head-to-toe, so all the funny memes we see of all business on top and sweatpants on the bottom–it’s a no-no.
Also, make sure you have a clean and professional background. Interviewers don’t need to see your dirty laundry, literally.
Try to keep your environment quiet with no outside distractions (kids, dogs, roommates, etc.). Disruptions can really throw off the flow of a great interview.
And, a super important tip is to look into the camera while speaking and listening. Showing your interviewer that you are actively listening shows you care about what they have to say.
