You Have to Hear What Alicia Silverstone Said About Brittany Murphy’s ‘Clueless’ Audition
Just in time for the Clueless’ 25th anniversary, Alicia Silverstone revealed that she found Brittany Murphy’s audition for the movie to be wonderful and adorable.
Sunday, July 19 marked the 25th anniversary of Clueless, the seminal coming-of-age film stylized as a romantic comedy that shaped a generation.

While teenage socialite Cher was the star of the film, naive newcomer Tai just about stole the show.
Cher, played by Alicia Silverstone, coined many timeless phrases such as “As if!” and “I’m totally buggin’!”
Although Cher’s phrases are iconic, it is actually Tai, who is played by the late Brittany Murphy, that has arguably the most memorable line in the film: “You’re a virgin who can’t drive.”
Silverstone recently spoke to Vogue about Clueless, but more specifically Murphy’s audition for the hit film, as the anniversary was just around the corner.

“I just remember thinking she was so great for the part. I can’t remember how many girls came in to audition for Tai that day and I don’t know if I saw a few girls for it or just her, but I remember Brittany being really adorable,” Alicia explained, warming the hearts of Clueless fans everywhere.
Silverstone continued in her recollection of Murphy’s audition for Tai saying, “I found her so wonderful and I said to Amy [Heckerling] right away, ‘I think she’s the one! She was the best one you guys!’ hoping they would agree.”
And the rest is history!
Murphy was only 17 years old during the filming of Clueless, while Silverstone was 18. The pair were the only actual teenagers in a movie set within a high school, but it is apparent that they hit it off in more ways than one.

Clueless is one of the most well-known, reprised, and parodied films of the 1990s, so it is clear that in 2020, on its 25th anniversary, it has withstood the test of time.
