Willow Smith Sets the Bar When It Comes to Advocating for Women’s Empowerment
From the tender age of nine years old, Willow Smith has been nothing short of a true leader.
The daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith continuously wraps her loving arms around women’s’ empowerment. Here’s a look at the different ways Willow Smith used her Hollywood prominence to help put females on the rise.
“I don’t support the exclusion of African American women from the [feminist] movement, but I do support all movements that support women—all women,” she once told Harper’s Bazaar.
“If other women aren’t going to respect other women,” states Willow, “we are pretty much f—ed. I try to talk to other women about, you know, listening to misogynistic music and paying to see misogynistic rappers and putting their energy into things that are only going to hurt them in the long run, and we just all need that awareness I think,” she shared in an interview with Girlgaze (via W magazine).

Willow is known for unapologetically being herself. At only 9-years-old, Willow instructed ladies everywhere to snap their heads “back and forth” and whip that hair like a helicopter. Willow explained the song’s meaning saying: “it means just be an individual. Like, you can’t be afraid to be yourself, you have to be yourself, and you can’t let anyone tell you that that’s wrong.” She is no stranger to leading by example.
She permits herself to shine as her authentic self, influencing her 6.6 million Instagram followers to do the same.
“Yep. I know so many kids who literally are, like, Instagram-famous. It’s literally crazy. Kids will paint a picture of themselves that is so far beyond who they actually are. It’s like they’re wearing someone else’s skin,” she vented.
“And then there’s people, like me and Jaden, who want to utilize social media to elevate the consciousness of those people who feel like all they want from social media is to be famous. Like, you can actually be a voice. You can actually say something that’s inspiring and not just make people feel like you need to buy things and be a certain way.” The words of a true role model.
She has supported women’s empowerment through social media, using her voice as a tool for change. Willow proposed rollback of the birth control mandate that would ensure that female contraception is covered by insurance providers.
She spoke about the restrictions placed on abortions.
