President Donald Trump shockingly supports the long-time associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

On Tuesday, during a White House briefing regarding the global pandemic, Trump commented on the scandal surrounding the British socialite. When questioned about the federal prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell, Trump responded, “I haven’t really been following it too much. I just wish her well, frankly. I’ve met her numerous times over the years, especially since I lived in Palm Beach, and I guess they lived in Palm Beach.”

Ghislaine Maxwell was infamously linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The nature of their relationship remains relatively ambiguous: However, the pair appeared to be romantically entangled during the early 1990s. Prior to Epstein’s conviction, the two remained close friends.

This past year, Jeffrey Epstein, an immensely influential and well-connected financier, was indicted on sex trafficking charges of minors. Epstein utilized his high-profile social circle (which included celebrities, politicians, and royalty) to facilitate a deeply disturbing, large-scale sex trafficking operation. Recently, Ghislaine has been arrested on charges relating to Epstein’s sex trafficking operation (crimes of enticement of minors and sex trafficking). The pair allegedly recruited children as young as 14 for their enterprise.

Due to Trump’s properties in New York and Florida, he shared mutual friends with the pair and interacted with them on numerous occasions. In a 2002 article for New York magazine, Trump maintained that Epstein was a “terrific guy” and “a lot of fun to be with.”

After Epstein’s conviction, Trump quickly distanced himself from the sex offender.

President Trump’s candid words have spurred fierce public backlash. Many Americans are appalled that the President would express sympathy for an individual charged with such horrific crimes. Many individuals perceive the President’s remark as a bizarre, unsettling, and inappropriate response to Epstein’s alleged accomplice.

We are looking to seeing whether the President plans to further address this matter.
