The prequel to Netflix’s hottest new show, The Witcher, is finally on its way.

Based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher explores the Continent, a medieval land populated by humans, elves, and monsters. The story circles around the journey of Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill), a magical monster-hunter better known as “Witcher,” as well as princess Ciri (Freya Allan) and sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra).

One of the most-watched shows of 2019, The Witcher got 76 million viewers in its first four weeks on the streaming service.

Fans have been asking for more stories on The Witcher universe, and Netflix delivered. The company announced on July 27 that a prequel, titled The Witcher: Blood Origin, is in the works. Set 1200 years prior to the events of the original show, Blood Origin will delve into the events that led to the creation of the first Witcher.

The spin-off limited series will have six parts in total. The Witcher creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will return to produce the project, joined by showrunner Declan de Barra.

Netflix still hasn’t announced the show’s official cast or release date. Behind the scenes, it has been hinted that Blood Origin will develop more of the Continent’s lore, looking especially into the Elven civilization prior to its clash with humans and eventual downfall.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall,” de Barra stated, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonization and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civilization’s true story behind. The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.”

While you wait for more news on Blood Origin, you can watch (or re-watch) all episodes of The Witcher now on Netflix.
