The Little Mix star has announced that she’ll be starring in an upcoming documentary focusing on her experiences of racism, helping illuminate the important conversations we need to be having in today’s climate.

The production, titled Leigh-Anne: Colorism and Race will be a one-off special exploring Leigh-Anne’s relationship with her racial identity. It’s sure to be an insightful look into the singer’s life as cameras join her family, friends, and fellow Little Mixers for candid discussions on how shifting race relations have shaped Leigh-Anne’s childhood and rise to fame.

Her announcement comes after fellow bandmate Jade Thirwall called out Microsoft after they conflated the two singers on the basis of their skin colors. Leigh-Anne’s work will also be the second documentary to be produced by a member of Little Mix. Last year, Jesy Nelson produced her own documentary called Odd One Out. It was a heartbreaking insight into her struggles with online scrutiny, winning critical acclaim for its open exploration of the damage cyberbullying can inflict.

Talking to the BBC, Leigh-Anne opened up on the importance of the project both for herself and for facilitating wider dialogues on race. She shared her hopes that through this documentary, she’ll be able to “best lend my voice to the debate so that the young people who look up to me won’t have to face what me and my generation have had to”, referring to the struggles with racial discrimination she’s previously shared. It’s a rally for change echoed in the singer’s latest social media activity, where she’s been amplifying calls for unitive action to undercut systemic racism.

Sadly, Leigh-Anne’s encounters with discrimination are all too familiar for many people. While there’s no air date currently confirmed for the episode, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for the documentary since the conversation on racism- and how we can make a change- is more pressing than ever.
