Miley Cyrus Drops New Song ‘Midnight Sky’ Along With a Self-Directed Music Video
Miley Cyrus just released her newest single “Midnight Sky,” along with a self-directed music video.
Midnight Sky is an anthem of independence and freedom, with lyrics “I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone, oh no. I don’t need to be loved by you.” Cyrus is setting herself apart from her exes, and instead is embracing being on her own. The song addresses moments from her eventful past year, with references to the media attention surrounding her previous relationships.
The video has a retro, colorful feel to it as Cyrus takes on inspiration from music icons Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry and Joan Jett. It is on-brand enough for the singer, but still fresh and exciting, making this the start of a new era for her.
It seems that she has been on a journey of trying different styles of music. Cyrus has been notoriously known for being a pop singer, but over the past few years, she’s been playing around with her sound. Starting with the release of her 2013 hip-hop album Bangerz, followed by her 2015 EP, Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz. More recently, she has been releasing more somber music, with her singles “Malibu” and “Slide Away” referencing her longstanding on-again-off-again relationship to Liam Hemsworth.
Cyrus has been hard at work promoting the song on social media, leading up to its release. In fact, she became the first artist to promote music through Instagram reels, a new feature on the app. Fans started utilizing the new feature by making videos of themselves singing and dancing to the song.

Forever and ever no more. 🖤 The #MidnightSky is the road I’m taking…. head high up in the clouds.
“Midnight Sky” is Cyrus’s first song of 2020, and her first solo project since her 2019 EP SHE IS COMING. Cyrus has stated after the release of SHE IS COMING, that the EP would be the first of a trilogy of EP’s, which would then be compiled into one album. It has yet to be said when the future EP’s will be released.
Miley promoted her new song in a promiscuous way as always on her social media platforms and we are here for it.
