AOC Nominates Bernie Sanders During Democratic National Convention

YouTube

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) only had 60 seconds during the Democratic National Convention (DNC), and she used them to nominate Senator Bernie Sanders.

AOC started her speech by welcoming listeners in English and Spanish, creating an inclusive space of equality.

The inspirational speech concluded with AOC saying, “In a time when millions of people of people in the United States are looking for deep systematic solutions to our crises of mass evictions, unemployment, and lack of health care, in el espíritu del pueblo and out of love for all people, I hereby second the nomination of Senator Bernard Sanders of Vermont for president of the United States of America.”

Many DNC viewers were confused by AOC’s nomination for Bernie Sanders. Democrats believed AOC would end her speech by endorsing and nominating Joe Biden, which was the main goal of the convention.

AOC resorted to Twitter to clear the confusion. She explained how her nomination was simply part of the convention’s rules, for there must be a roll call for all candidates that pass “the delegated threshold.” AOC has already endorsed and congratulated Joe Biden for his presidential nomination.

Although AOC nominates Bernie Sanders at the end of her speech, the core of it exemplifies what America will and should represent in the future after the 2020 election. She hopes that we can see an America “striving to recognize and repair the wounds of social injustice, colonization, misogyny, and homophobia,” a movement she believes Bernie Sanders has begun creating.

Many young voters are showing their support for AOC and her beliefs through various social media platforms such as Twitter.

With just 60 seconds, AOC was capable of delivering a historic speech, reminding us that we are striving for a better future. This speech encourages us to be involved and, most importantly, vote.
